Moving questions, answered
The questions we field most often, grouped so you can find yours quickly. Everything here is what we would tell you on the phone. If your question is not on this page, call (631) 256-4498 or email hello@wearemoovers.com and we will answer it directly.
Booking and scheduling
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable. It matters more at the end of a month and through the summer, when Long Island dates go first. Shorter notice often works, so it is worth a call either way.
What days are you open?
Seven days a week. Exact opening and closing hours for each day.
Can I change my move date after booking?
Tell us as early as you can and we will look at the schedule. Dates at the end of a month are the hardest to shuffle, so an early call is worth a lot.
Do you work weekends?
Yes, and weekend slots book up first. For a specific holiday, call and ask rather than assuming either way.
Where do you move to and from?
Our yard is in Lake Ronkonkoma and we serve Suffolk and Nassau Counties. Long-distance moves start here and go out of state. The towns we cover are listed under /areas.
Quotes and pricing
How do I get a quote?
Fill in the form at /quote or call (631) 256-4498. Quotes are free and carry no obligation, and someone gets back to you the same business day.
What is the difference between the estimator and a quote?
The estimator on the quote page returns a range for a typical move of your size. A quote is a price for your move, based on a walkthrough of your actual home.
Does the price change on move day?
The price you agree to is the price you pay, with no hidden fees. What changes a price is a change to the job itself: items that were not in the walkthrough, an added stop, or access that turns out to be different from what was described. If that comes up, the crew raises it with you before the work happens, not after.
How do I pay, and when?
Accepted payment methods, when payment is due, and whether a deposit is taken at booking.
On move day
What time will the crew arrive?
You get an arrival window when the job is booked, and we confirm it with you as the date gets close. Call the office if the day changes on your end.
Do I need to be there the whole time?
Someone who can make decisions should be at each address: which boxes go where, what stays behind, where the sofa lands. It does not have to be the same person at both ends, as long as we know who to ask.
Should I help carry things?
No. You are more useful pointing than lifting, and an extra body on a staircase makes the carry harder rather than faster.
What should I do with kids and pets?
A neighbor, a relative, or one room with the door closed and a sign on it. Doors get propped open all day and the front of the house is a work zone.
How long does a move take?
It depends on volume, access and distance, which is exactly why we walk the house before quoting. Ask for the expected span when you get your quote, and ask what would push it longer.
Packing and materials
Do you supply boxes and packing materials?
No. Moovers does not supply packing materials. The one exception is the free Starter Kit that comes with an in-person quote on moves of two bedrooms and up: three boxes, two rolls of tape and one moving blanket.
How do I get the free Starter Kit?
Book a free in-person quote and we bring it with us when we come to price the job. Moves of two bedrooms and larger qualify. Details are at /starter-kit.
Can you pack for me?
Yes, packing and unpacking is one of our services. Because we do not supply materials, plan on having boxes, paper and tape at the house before the packing day, and raise it when you get your quote so it is priced in.
What cannot go on the truck?
Propane tanks, gasoline, paint, aerosols and most cleaning chemicals cannot ride. Use them up, give them away, or check your town's hazardous-waste drop-off before move week. Plants and perishables travel better in your own car, because trucks get hot.
Do you take furniture apart and put it back together?
Yes. Beds, tables and similar items come apart at the old place and go back together at the new one. Tell us at the quote if something was assembled in the room and has never been through a doorway.
Storage, paperwork and insurance
Do you offer storage?
Yes, for a week or for a year. It is the usual answer when a closing date slips, and booking it alongside the move means one crew handles it once.
Will I know what is in storage?
Items are logged as they come off the truck, so you can find out what is in there without opening anything.
Are you licensed?
Yes. NYSDOT #42381 and USDOT #4161235. What those numbers mean, and how to check them yourself, is explained on our licenses and credentials page.
My building wants a certificate of insurance. Can you send one?
Yes. Send us the building's requirements and the exact wording they want for the certificate holder, ideally as soon as you book. How much lead time the office needs to issue a COI.
What paperwork will I sign?
Expect an estimate or order for service when you book, a bill of lading on the day, and an inventory if anything goes into storage. Read what you sign, and ask about anything on it you do not recognise before the truck loads.
Still have a question?
Call, email, or send the quote form. Free quotes, no obligation, and an answer the same business day.
