What a move actually costs, and how to estimate yours
There is no single price for a move, but there is a short list of things that set one. This page walks through what those are, how to size up your own house before you call, and where to find the ballpark estimator we already have on the quote page. The exact number still comes from a free quote, and once you have that number it is the number.
The inputs that actually move the price
Two houses with the same bedroom count can price very differently. What separates them is how much there is to carry, how far it travels, and how hard the carry is at each end.
- Volume. Boxes, furniture, and how full the garage, basement and attic are. This is the single biggest input, and it is the one people underestimate about their own house.
- Distance. A move between two Suffolk towns and a move from Nassau to another state are different jobs with different math behind them.
- Access at both ends. A ground floor with a driveway is the easy case. A third-floor walkup, a long carry from shared parking, or a building that only releases the service elevator in a set window all add time.
- Crew size and hours. More people finish a house faster, fewer people take longer, and the size of the job decides which trade makes sense.
- Special items. A piano, a gun safe, a slate pool table, a full tank, a treadmill, oversized glass or stone. These need extra hands, extra equipment, or both.
- Packing. Doing it yourself, having the crew do it, or splitting the difference on just the fragile rooms changes the hours on the job.
- Timing. The last and first days of a month and summer weekends are the busiest slots on Long Island, and they fill first.
Start with the ballpark estimator on the quote page
There is an estimator near the bottom of our quote page. You pick a home size, whether the move is local, long-distance or commercial, and whether you are packing yourself or having us pack. It returns the range most jobs like yours land in.
Treat that range the way you treat a weather forecast. It is built on typical moves. It does not know about your basement, your driveway, or the elevator reservation your building wants. Useful for setting a budget, useless for signing anything.
When you want a real number, the quote form is on the same page. Free, no obligation, and someone replies the same business day.
Size up your own move in ten minutes
A short walk through your own house gets you most of the way to a realistic figure, and it makes the conversation with us much faster.
- Count the rooms, then count the rooms people forget: garage, basement, attic, shed, the closet under the stairs.
- Estimate boxes per room. Kitchens and bookshelves produce far more boxes than bedrooms do.
- List every piece of furniture you cannot lift alone, and flag anything that will not fit through a doorway assembled.
- Note the stairs, and count the steps. Fourteen steps and forty steps are not the same carry.
- Measure the tight spots: the turn at the top of the stairs, the front door width, the elevator depth.
- Decide now what is not coming. Anything sold, donated or thrown out before move day is volume you are not paying to carry.
Line items people forget to budget for
- Packing materials. Moovers does not supply them beyond the free Starter Kit that comes with an in-person quote, so boxes, paper and tape for the rest of the house are your own cost.
- Junk removal or a dumpster for whatever is not making the trip.
- Storage, if either closing date could slip.
- Building requirements, such as a certificate of insurance or a reserved elevator window.
- The day itself: time off work, cleaning the old place, and the first grocery run at the new one.
Why the in-person walkthrough is worth the half hour
A quote given over the phone is only as good as the description behind it, and most people describe their basement generously.
An in-person walkthrough puts eyes on the actual furniture, the actual stairs and the actual parking. That is how an estimate becomes a price instead of a guess. On moves of two bedrooms and up, the visit also comes with the free Starter Kit: three boxes, two rolls of tape and a moving blanket.
Pricing model to confirm: whether local moves are quoted hourly, as a flat rate, or both, and whether any minimum applies.
