White glove moving on Long Island

White glove is the full-service end of moving: you do not pack a box, and you do not clear up after one. The crew packs the house, moves it, places the furniture where you point, puts it back together, unpacks what you want unpacked, and takes the packing debris away.

What the full-service tier actually covers

The difference between this and a standard move is not the truck. It is what you are left holding at the end of the day. Packing is done for you, room by room, with everything inventoried as it goes into the cartons. Loading, transport and unloading run as they always do. At the other end, furniture is placed and reassembled, boxes are unpacked to the extent you asked for, and the cartons and wrap leave with the crew.

It suits the moves where your time is the scarce thing: a household with two working adults and a closing date, a family moving a parent, a house too full to face packing, a move happening while you are somewhere else. Ask at quote time how materials are handled for a full pack, since that is worth settling in writing before the date.

Placement decided before the truck arrives

The tier only works if somebody has decided where things go. Walk the new place with the crew lead first, or hand over a floor plan with the large pieces marked on it. Rugs go down before the furniture that sits on them. Big pieces go into a room before it fills with boxes. Beds get assembled where they will stay, not where there happens to be space.

The cost of not deciding is furniture moved twice, which is slow and is the point at which floors and door casings get marked. Ten minutes with a floor plan beforehand saves more time than anything else on this list.

Unpacking, and the mountain of cardboard

Unpacking is a choice you can make room by room rather than all or nothing. Most people want the kitchen and the bedrooms usable the first night and are content to work through the rest themselves. Say which rooms at the quote so the time is built into the day rather than discovered at six in the evening.

Debris is the part people underestimate. A full-house pack produces a startling volume of flattened cartons, paper and wrap, and left behind it fills a garage. On this tier it leaves with the crew. If there is also furniture and clutter that is not making the trip, that is a separate removal and worth scheduling at the same time.

What still needs you

Decisions, first of all: what is coming, what is not, and where things go. Passports, jewelry, medications, closing documents and laptops still ride in your car. Pets and small children are better somewhere else for the day, for their sake as much as the schedule's. Utilities, building access and elevator reservations still have to be arranged in your name.

And some work belongs to licensed trades rather than to a moving crew: gas appliance disconnection and reconnection, electrical work, plumbing, and anything mounted into a wall. Line those up separately so the day does not stall waiting on a trade nobody booked.
